Meditation as Liberation
Tia Sheree Gaynor, PhD (she/her) is an award-winning researcher and an established healing and justice coach, mindfulness and meditation guide, and scholar. All of her work builds upon decades of liberatory practice in community and is rooted in a desire and commitment to work alongside with people, communities, and organizations in ways that center humanization and for all people.
“The practices have been a balm for my mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health.”
Meditation Learner
Mindfulness and meditation are aspects of a wider umbrella of contemplative practices.
Mindfulness is often defined as the act of paying attention, on purpose. Meditation refers to a wide range of practices that not only help you pay attention on purpose, but that deepen your connection to yourself and the world. Ultimately, a sustained mindfulness and meditation practice can help you heal from existing trauma and lead you toward seeing the many ways you are connected to a much larger world.
My approach to meditation is NOT...
eliminating thoughts from the mind
a solely individual practice
a practice for the most privileged
sitting perfectly still
exclusionary, performative, or euro-centric
My approach to meditation IS about...
not getting caught up in your thoughts
an avenue that prepares the self for collective work
available to anyone, anywhere, at any time
continuing to find a posture that is most comfortable
joy, ease, and stability
“We all have what we
need internally for our own healing. Sometimes, we just need someone to help us see what’s already there.”
COACHING.

Hustle society teaches that productivity determines worthiness. So, in response, we hustle. We hustle at work, we hustle and shop, we hustle collectively in friend groups. Whether the work is with government agencies, nonprofit organizations, institutions of higher education or corporations, hustle culture is embedded across all aspects of our work.
Stress. Burnout. Exhaustion. This is what hustle culture really produces. Too exhausted to care for yourself. Too burned out to enjoy time off. So stressed that it negatively impacts your bodies.
This does not have to be your default nor the way you work. It’s not about a work life balance; it is about finding the right ratio for you.
Through justice and healing coaching, Tia engages in work that moves individuals toward
personal self-actualization. Together, Tia and coaching partners collaborators work to recall the norms they want to set for their own lives so that they can reduce and heal from stress, burnout and exhaustion.
The coaching experience supports partners in determining how best to show up in ways that feel whole, healed and rejuvenated so that they may live professionally in wisdom, steadiness, and care, which is especially necessary right now.
“Coaching with Tia challenged me to practice leadership differently: to be more present, courageous, and intentional”
– State Government Leader
QUESTIONS.
Is coaching right for me? Ask yourself:
Do I need support in setting and holding boundaries at work and in life?
Am I willing to be introspective?
Do I want to build greater alignment in my professional and personal lives?
If you answered “yes” to at least one of these questions, coaching with Tia may be right for you.
“Through individual coaching, Tia offered a meaningful space to reflect on my journey as a BIPOC leader. Tia challenged me to think critically about intentionality, intersectionality, and the motivations behind decisions and actions. Rather than providing answers, she guided me through thoughtful questions, shared valuable resources, and empowered me to develop my own approach to leadership and equity work. As a result, I became a more confident, reflective, and effective leader. – Executive, City of St. Paul, MN”
